Mandatory Evacuation Still In Place For RSF

Fire district spokeswoman Julie Taber says the mandatory evacuation is still in place for Rancho Santa Fe. Many have hoped that it will be lifted with the easing of winds this afternoon, but there are still many downed trees and other hazards in the area. Taber said they're "working on a plan," presumably for repopulation, but she didn't know when they'll put it into action.

Of course, we will post an update as soon as we get word that the evacuation is over.

We live on the far West Side of the Covenant and are staying in a hotel. Knowing when the evacuation won't be lifted is as important as when it will be lifted. We understand that you can't tell us when it will be lifted --- but if the RSF evacuation won't be lifted tonight, 10/24 --- or if the earliest is Friday. it would be great to know. Please tell us so that we can plan.

It is 4:10 pm on 10/24/2007 and the sky is blue over RSF and the winds are calm. Fire maps currently indicate that the only active burn area of the Witch fire is east of the 15. I am staying at a friends house on Jasmine Crest in Olivenhien and I can see me home in the Groves. I can practically throw a football to my home but I am not allowed to enter RSF. This seems like those in charge are not keeping us out for safety reasons. Who makes the judgment call?
